Four Watches In Watch History

There are a lot of different styles of gents watches on the market today. In this article we will be reviewing a couple of different ones that have a rich history in the watch world. The watches that we will be talking about are Michel Jordi watches, Omega watches, Harry Winston watches, and the ever famous Rolex watch.

Michel Jordi watches are the first ones that we will be talking about today. The reason that Michel Jordi is in this article is because of his contribution of the twist lock system to the watch world. Back in 2004 he created the first ever twist lock on a watch that allowed for two faces on a single watch.

The next timepiece that we are going to talk about is the famous Omega brand watch. There are two reasons that this particular watch has ingrained itself into watch history and world history. The first reason that this company is so famous is that it was the official timepiece of the 1931 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The second reason that this watch company has made such a huge impact on watch history and the history of the world is that the "Speed master" model Omega watch was the worn on the 1969 moon landing, thus making the watch the first worn on the moon.

Harry Winston watches is our next topic of discussion in today's article. These watches made an impact on watch making history when their "Opus V" series became famous for being hand crafted and precisely timed by now famous watchmakers FP Journe and Greubel-Forsey et al. These watches sell for around two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

Now onto one of the most famous watches in all of history, the Rolex watch. This company which began in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and W Davis established their watch company called Wilsdorf and Davis. This company which in 1908 became Rolex was the first wrist watch company or pocket watch company to make a truly water proof watch, it is the "Oyster". Rolex was also the first company to come out with an automatic date watch called the "Date just", and the fist dive watch called the "submariner".

The Rolex, Omega, Harry Winston and Michel Jordi are just some of the key players in wrist watch history. There are tons and tons of other watches and watchmakers that have all played important roles in history this was just a brief overview of some of the more famous ones.

King of Watches and Watch of Kings – Patek Philippe

by Dan P.P. Reynolds

Of all the watchmakers, the Swiss are known for the top quality watches all over the world. And while there are many brands among them, one stands out from the crowd with the most luxurious and expensive watches ever made.

Patek Philippe watches have a long history that is reaching year 1839. A Polish watchmaker Antoni Norbert Patek started making watches in Geneva with his friend Franciszek Czapek. In 1844 their ways separated and in 1845 Patek joined the French watchmaker Adrien Philippe. They've began making wristwatches and the first Patek Philippe watch has seen the light in 1868.

Patek Philippe is famous for the most expensive watches in the world. The first record was set when a single watch was auctioned for $11 million dollars in 1999. The was watch originally made for Henry Graves Jr. in 1933. The most recent record was made in April 2008, when the platinum Patek Philippe tourbillon wristwatch was sold at Hong Kong Sotheby's for $1.49 million dollars.

These watches are also known for their royal owners. Patek Philippe had a great demand among the collectors and the watches meant high social status and wealth. Since Queen Victoria's reign, these watches were owned by monarchs, popes, political leaders and rulers.

In 1989 Patek Philippe reminded the world about themselves by creating one of the most complicated mechanical watches ever made, Calibre 89. The watch holds 33 complications including the date of Easter, a thermometer, time of sunrise, equation of time and more.

These watches are the most expensive luxury watches even today where they come in modern models. They still are a sign of wealth and are owned by the elite. However, despite their price, they are available to anyone.

They are not only attractive for the collectors but for anyone who has a spare $40 thousands and wants to get a watch to show off for any occasion. No doubt, Patek Philippe is something to be proud of having, as if joining the lines of Queen Victoria and the likes.
